Our History

Founded in  1983

From this humble beginning 32 years ago, the Magic of Christmas has grown to a volunteer family of 800  Santas and elves!  On Christmas Eve we:

  • use 18 donated Calgary Transit buses
  • send the elves out on 36 shifts of six and a half hours each
  • visit over 500 families
  • bring cheer to over 4500 people in hospitals and other institutions.

Santa and his elves raise funds through Christmas shows and donations from corporate and private citizens. Our reindeer buses (generously donated by Calgary Transit) are filled with the compassion of our benefactors and volunteers who commit their time and heart to make sure that love, sharing and caring are brought to people who may be alone at the most joyous time of year. And you thought you could hide from Santa…..

The Magic of Christmas is a 100-per-cent volunteer non-denominational organization.

Drive-by Elfings

Santa’s Sleighs sometimes take advantage of a red light to spread a little Christmas joy wherever it may happen. You should see the look on those little faces when Santa and his elves descend upon a car to sing a joyful carol!

Our Message

We are more than just gifts.  We are about Loving, Caring and Sharing and truly spreading the spirit and the magic of Christmas to those in despair. We will visit over 500 families and thousands of patients in care facilities throughout the city this year to bring the Christmas spirit into their homes and hearts. We would love to have you be a part of this year’s experience, whether you donate time, money or simply help us spread the word. As you may know, The Magic of Christmas is a not-for-profit charity focused on delivering the Christmas Spirit of loving, caring and sharing to many.  This is where we differ from many other charities. The Magic of Christmas brings laughter, songs, hugs, as well as, gifts, necessities and referrals to other support groups in our community.  We work with City of Calgary social services and the Calgary Police Service to make sure Santa doesn’t miss anyone who needs a special visit. Every Christmas Eve, we load Calgary Transit buses, magically transformed into reindeer sleighs, with Santa and his elves and we visit homes and hospital rooms of people who are in despair.  Despair can come in many forms, be it emotional, financial or physical.  They may have had a death in their immediate family, lost a job, gotten a medical diagnoses that has been difficult,  or they are spending Christmas in a care facility away from their loved ones, etc. No matter the reason, we work hard to make sure that those in despair experience loving, caring and sharing during a time of the year that is supposed to be joyful. Please view our website to find out how you can help, how to refer someone for Santa’s route or how to donate.  We are forever grateful for your kindness and generosity.

Keep your eyes open…The elves are coming…

Yours Truly,
